Alright, y’all-I’m gonna be real with you. The first time I ate beignets it was in New Orleans Square in Disneyland. They were goddamn delicious and they were shaped like Mickey Mouse. So as tomorrow is Mardi Gras, I made some delicious beignets to celebrate!
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup lukewarm water
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 envelope active dry yeast
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup evaporate milk
- 3.5 cups flour
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- vegetable oil
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Directions:
- Mix water, sugar, and years in a large bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Whisk the eggs, salt, and evaporated milk together, then add yeast mixture.
- Slowly stir in the flour and shortening.
- Knead dough on a floured surface and then place in an oiled boil, cover with plastic wrap, and allow to rise for 2 hours.
- Pour oil in a sauce pan, and allow to heat.
- Roll out dough on a floured surface, and cut into 1-2 inch squares with a pizza cutter.
- Fry dough 4-5 at a time flipping continuously until browned on all sides. Allow to drain on a plate with paper towels.
- Place all beignets in a paper bag, top with powdered sugar, and shake well.
- Eat!
